For all the joy and happiness a pet can bring to your home, there is sometimes also the worry that they might damage or soil your carpet and soft furnishings. However, while accepting some level of wear and tear is necessary, there is no need for pet damage to be a problem if you take reasonable precautions.

  1. Vacuuming

To keep your carpet in top condition when you have a furry friend in the house, frequent vacuuming (at least once or twice a week) is advisable to stop fur and dirt from becoming worked down into the carpet fibres.

  1. Keep Claws Clipped

Trimmed claws will produce less wear from snagging on your carpet and other soft furnishings, and also reduce the temptation for your pet to use the carpet for scratching. Buy a scratching post, mat, or toy for your pet and direct them to it every time they try to claw your carpet.

  1. Use Mats or Rugs

If there is a specific area where your pet likes to spend time, such as a cat who enjoys snoozing under a radiator, or a space where the dog tends to run in from the garden with muddy paws, then it can help to lay a mat or rug for some extra protection. This is also a good tip for areas around food bowls.

  1. Clean up stains immediately

If a toileting accident occurs, it is best to absorb any liquid straight away with kitchen towels. Remove solids from the area, and moisten it with hot water. Try not to rub as this will work the dirt deeper into the pile. If any dirt remains, it may need to be treated with a specialist carpet cleaner.

Sometimes, your furry friend will rush inside without remembering to wipe their muddy paws first! In this case, it is easier to let the mud dry out first, and then vacuum up the dried residue. If there are any marks left, use a stain remover, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
